Tourists

We love you, we really do.  If you didn't come here, we would all be forced to move away from these beautiful mountains and get real jobs that we could survive on year round.  But, there is a reason we call you tourons (short for tourist morons).  I mean really, do you think that just because you're on vacation, that common sense and laws common to all states in this nation, somehow don't apply up here?

There is a speed limit posted in our town for a reason, but somehow, just because you're not from here, you think it automatically gives you permission to go 10-15 over or 20 -25 under.  I know, I realize, some of you have never been here before, but seriously, going 5 miles down the middle of the street isn't going to solve the problem of you being lost in our 2 mile long town.  Neither is suddenly stopping in the middle of the road and then turning with absolutely no warning.  Turn signals are a very nice thing, more than just common courtesy to the unfortunate person who got stuck behind you while you were trying to find your destination.  We are very nice people, if you truly are lost, pull over the correct way, get out of your car, go into a store, and ask someone for directions, trust me, they will be more than happy to oblige.

To those of you that choose to walk our beautiful town, yes, it's true, we only have 2 crosswalks in our town and neither are in very convenient places to cross the road, so you don't actually have to use them to get to the other side, but that still doesn't exempt you from common road crossing laws.  Yes, you do still need to look both ways before you cross.  Our town has parallel parking, and often, those drivers can't see you hiding in between those cars just before you jump into the middle of the road, so stopping quickly, isn't always an option.  No, no one has actually been hit by a car that I am aware of, but I can tell you there have been many, many close calls.  Some of them, could have ended up being very bad, not just for the pedestrians, but for the long string of cars behind the front driver.  Oh, and if you choose to stand in the middle of the road, and have a very lengthy conversation, while your young children run all around  you, don't be surprised or upset, when the local Marshall comes along and tickets you for child endangerment.  The middle of the road is NOT the place to discuss your evening plans.

Along those lines, walking in a diagonal across the street is never a good idea either.  When tourists are here, that means town is busy, that means there a lot of people driving on our main road.  Walking across the street in any pattern other than straight is bound to make quite a few drivers angry, local or otherwise.   Just because pedestrians have the right away, that does not give them the right to hold up traffic for several minutes, unless they are in a wheelchair, walker, or otherwise incapacitated.
Although, we do have parallel parking, that does not mean you get to park parallel to a no parking zone, or an entrance to a driveway.  I don't know how many people I've told that they can't block the driveway to our building.  The reply is always "We're only here for a few minutes."  I don't care how long you think you're going to be there, you can't park there.  My reply is always, "Well, a Paramedic lives here, and if he goes out on a call, he's going to have to get out in a hurry, and you're blocking his exit."  Again, I'm meant with "It's only for a few minutes."  Really?  How would you feel if someone blocked the only way in and out of your home?

Manners.  Manners are a good thing.  We live here, you don't.  Yes, we may depend on you to make a living, but that doesn't give you the right to treat us like dirt.  When you treat us badly, don't be surprised when we treat you badly in return.  We are trained to be kind, and serve our customers in the best way that we can, but not if you treat us like the scum of the Earth.  We choose to live here, you choose to visit, if you don't want to treat us kindly, don't visit.  Give up your spot to someone who appreciates what we have to offer here, instead of ruining it for us, and the others who are grateful to visit.

Ok, enough of a rant.  Again, I state that without you, we would all be out of business, and be forced to move away, but please, please, please, use common sense and common courtesy while you are visiting us, and your visit will be a much nicer one.  I promise.
