Thoughts on Thanksgiving

Think about this for just a moment: If not shopping on Thanksgiving Day so that workers can enjoy Thanksgiving on Thanksgiving Day means so much to us, then we should also consider those that work on Thanksgiving Day that are not retail workers. Gas Stations are open so that you can get gas and drive to see your relatives. Airports, Train stations and Bus Depots are open so that you can go to see your relatives. Hotels are open so that you don't have to stay at your relative's houses. Paramedics, EMTS, and First Responders are working so that if you choke on your turkey, you won't die. Police are working so that they can keep you safe while you enjoy your Thanksgiving meal. Firefighters are working so that when your relative forgets about the potatoes and sets the kitchen on fire, you don't lose your whole house. All those people who keep the electricity grid up and running have to work so that you can cook, visit and watch the football game. So, if you are truly, truly serious about everyone deserving to celebrate Thanksgiving on Thanksgiving Day then, take care not drive our cars, or take an airplane, train or bus to visit relatives.Do not use any electricity, water, phones or internet. We should also make sure that no one gets sick and needs an ambulance, or no one breaks the law and needs a police officer, or no one starts a fire and needs a fireman. We should also not go visit relatives and stay in hotels, or go to a resort and partake in their amenities, such as a ski area, or spa.
You can be mad at me if you want, but my father was a police officer and now a paramedic and he rarely had Thanksgiving Day off. My grandparents ran a hotel, and all the people who came to enjoy their Thanksgiving on vacation with loved ones, still needed to be able to check in or have their rooms cleaned. We rarely got to enjoy Thanksgiving on Thanksgiving Day, but not because of shoppers, but because of everyday stuff that we take for granted. So don't shop, but don't forget the other people that make your day to day life easier, who are still out there working on Thanksgiving Day so that you can enjoy your Thanksgiving.
